That all said, I found the writing choppy, lacking a deep felt emotion of the characters (even the main ones) and thought the second half was a bit over-romanticized. She finds it filled with Jewish infants, some dead and some clinging to life.

Naturally this is another book where apparently my rating/opinion doesn't line up with the popular one.

I could not put this book down because it was for me very interesting and I felt so sorry for Noa that I shed several tears for her. Don’t waste your time reading it. Historical fiction has allowed me to learn about past events in a fun, exciting, and interesting way. The Orphan's Tale by Pam Jenoff was a very moving read. What they felt, I felt. Not just any train. Noa is a novice, but she learns to overcome her fears and rely upon the stellar veteran Astrid. Experiencing bouts of brooding that alternate with spasms of altruistic panic, Noa grabs the baby and makes a run for it. When their heart broke, my heart broke. She seeks refuge in the traveling circus where they offer her a job in exchange for room and board. Heartbreaking and beautiful.

This story is told with such passion and enormous heart, with pulse-pounding suspense as Astrid, Noa, and the rest of their circus friends are under constant threat of the Nazis. This was a fascinating blend of the two, so I was in heaven! At sixteen, Noa has already lived a lifetime. This was written beautifully. I don’t have enough words to express how much I dislike this book and the author’s writing style. It told the story of a friendship between two women, Noa and Astrid, during World War II. Sixteen-year-old Noa has been cast out in disgrace after becoming pregnant by a Nazi soldier and being forced to give up her baby. Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2018. As Herr Neuhoff, the circus owner, prepares for what may be his last tour, he is forced to decide the fate of Jews hiding on his train. Cleaning the tiny German railway station for food and a bed was all sixteen year old Noa was able to do – her Dutch father had disowned her after she told her parents she was pregnant. Telling details reveal circus life in the air and on the rails — every person, for example, is assigned two buckets to use for water, names emblazoned to lessen confusion. Refresh and try again. Noa manages to break into the nursery-slash-cattle car and rescue a half-dead months-old child. Jenoff's best book yet!

The lifeline the circus created is both fascinating and emotionally potent given it is rooted in historical facts.
